Chen Hsiang Fu — Momento Mori

Aura — Winter 2016

The clock as a tool to measure time. Measurements are standard for verifying the sense of scale. In everyday life, the unit of measurement of time is also an important way for us to experience the passage of time: from year, month and day to an hour, minute and second, their presence let people perceive the change of environment.

Memento Mori translates from the Latin as remember to die. Skulls remind us of what strangeness exists just beneath the armour of flesh. They are also pure emblems of death. In art, Memento Mori pieces symbolize our morality and death’s relationship to life. Common symbols in that art include the skull which representing the certainty of death, hourglasses, candles, and watches mean every minute that passes brings you closer to death.

Everything has its expiry date. like passport credit card and also the digital product. those materials all have high sensitivity of time. Considering the lifespan of the smartphone is now only 18 months and a laptop's lifespan is only around two years, 20 to 50 million metric tons of electronic waste disposed of worldwide each year, about 70% of it is shipped to landfills in many developing nations. In this project, the timer has been set the time for 3years in second, which is the average lifespan of a laptop and the passing time can be easily be perceived.
